About

This project is part of Live It Learn It's Pathways to Professions program.  We team with professionals to create a learning experience that allows students to act like the profession that is being studied.  In this instance, students met with conservators and photographers at the U.S. Capitol to learn how they both play a role in maintaining and preserving the Capitol building for visitors and staffers.  In addition, Charles Badal accompanied Ronda Scott's class on all Live It Learn It trips and created his own photo documentary of their year of study.

Live It Learn It wishes to thank:

  • Charles Badal, Architect of the Capitol Photography Branch

  • Michael Dunn, Chief, Architect of the Capitol Photography Branch

  • Maxwell Hessman, General Manager, The Coupe Restaurant

  • Nikon Professional Services

  • KK Ottesen, Graphic Design

  • Dewitt Roseborough, Architect of the Capitol Photography Branch

  • Ronda Scott, Teacher, Raymond Education Campus

  • Dr. Barbara Wolanin, Curator, Architect of the Capitol

Live It Learn It plans and leads academically rigorous trips to cultural institutions throughout the DC area for 4th-6th grade students in high poverty DC public schools.  Each program consist of a pre-lesson taught by LILI followed by an engaging trip and then a culmintating post-lesson to assess student learning.  Each class participates in three programs throughout the academic year with a focus on the arts, science and history each.

Pathways to Professions programs are developed in addition to our core programming when unique opportunities arise.  If you wish to propose or participate in a Pathways to Professions program, please contact us.

Charles Badal

Photographer

I had sought, for some time, to find a way to produce photographs of students in the classroom setting. My photographs, taken at Raymond Elementary School in Washington, D.C., are the product of a mutually beneficial partnership between myself and Live It Learn It.

In what is certainly to be a highlight of my career, Live It Learn It gave me the opportunity to teach the students in photography, and offer them insight into photography as a profession. My hope is that the experience was as rewarding to the students as it was for me.
